Atom Probe Analysis of Solute Clustering above a Miscibility Gap
نویسنده
چکیده
At temperatures just above a miscibility gap, spatially small but large amplitude solute fluctuations or clusters are predicted. These clusters may be retained in the solution upon quenching to a lower temperature and may influence subsequent decomposition kinetics. A model has been developed which quantitatively predicts the shape of composition histograms as a function of temperature and composition. At high temperatures, the model predicts a binomial-shaped composition distribution indicative of a random dispersion of solute, whereas at temperatures just above the miscibility gap, a broadening of the distribution is expected signifying solute clustering. Experimental histograms measured in an Fe-45at.%Cr alloy were found to obey the predictions of the thermodynamic model.

Atom Probe Tomography Investigations of Modi ed Early Stage Clustering in Si-Containing Aluminum Alloys
In this paper atom probe tomography is used to explore early stage clustering in aluminum alloys. Two novel concepts for a modi cation of clustering are discussed. Control of early stage clustering is welcome from an application point of view since clustering deteriorates strength evolution during the industrial heat treatment of the important class of Al Mg Si precipitation-hardenable alloys. ...

متن کامل3D atom probe study of solute atoms clustering during natural ageing and pre-ageing of an Al-Mg-Si alloy
The pair-correlation function applied to 3D Atom Probe reconstructed volumes has been used to study the influence of a pre-ageing treatment (363K) on the early stages of precipitation at 458K in an Al-Mg-Si 6016 alloy. Mg-Si short-range positive pair correlation (clustering) is shown to form after a pre-ageing treatment. The hetero-atomic clusters are thought to act as preferential nucleation s...
متن کاملObservations of decomposition of martensite during heat treatment of steels using atom probe tomography
The decomposition of martensite during tempering or ageing is an important phenomenon as it leads to changes in the mechanical properties. These changes could take place during both steel manufacturing or in-service. Thus, their understanding is required to predict the material performance. Recent advances in the development of local electrode atom probes has led to a significant increase in th...
متن کاملCARBON DIOXIDE MINIMUM MISCIBILITY PRESSURE ESTIMATION (CASE STUDY)
Carbon dioxide flooding is considered to be one of the most effective enhanced oil recovery methods for the light oil reservoirs. Depending on the operating pressure, the process might be miscible or immiscible. Minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) is the most important parameter for assessing the applicability of any miscible gas flood for an oil reservoir. The miscibility condition is determine...
